Mohs (Cancer) Reconstruction

Mohs surgery a type of surgery used to remove skin cancer that utilizes microscopic analysis at the time of surgery so the surgeon knows immediately whether all the cancer is gone. It is the most effective way we know to completely remove skin cancer (to the microscopic level) and minimize the chance of it coming back. While this technique is very effective it is not predictable how much tissue will need to be removed. Some cancers send out finger-like projections into normal tissue and are very difficult to remove. For these cancers, a large area of normal tissue must sometimes be removed.

When delicate structures such as the eyelids, ears, nose, and lips are involved, reconstructing the resulting defect can be quite a challenge. When reconstructing the eyelids, it is important that the eyes close properly afterward and tear drainage is normal. When reconstructing the nostril it is important that the support is adequate to prevent nasal valve collapse when breathing. When reconstructing the lips, it is important that the mouth opening and closing functions are maintained for proper speech and eating. Dr. Patel is a facial plastic surgeon, which means he has both experience with the function of facial structures that comes with his ear, nose, throat surgery training, as well as the proper aesthetic appearance that comes from his cosmetic training.
